From the Commander’s Desk

Last year was a tough year for our post.  The economy and the new laws regarding gambling, driving under the influence, and the smoking ban has made business tougher.  We have had to cut back on our donations to schools, churches, police and fire departments, and to the VA hospital.  We are trying new ways to earn money by taking donations at several businesses, four-way stops, and other such places have helped us.  We have had to close the club two days a week and cut the hours of business.  I would like some help from our members to recruit new members, help out with bingo, and to participate in our funeral detail.  I also welcome any ideas on how we can make more money for our post or on events that our members and guests can participate in.

To date, we have created Wii & Wings on Friday night.  We have been hosting card games on Saturday nights.  Of course, we still have bingo on Sunday nights.  On Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday we host a Zumba fitness class.  All of the above events are open to members and non-members as well.  On Thursday nights we offer half priced drinks.  We need more ideas such as these to attract present and new members.  These events have had great success and we would welcome other ideas.  Members can also rent the hall at a reduced rate for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, fund-raisers, class reunions, or any other event our members would like to have.

Our military rites team is doing an outstanding job.  We are very proud to offer this service to our veterans and community.  We would like to continue its availability.  We need our Korean and Vietnam veteran to succeed our aging WWII veterans in order to continue this service.

The Legion’s birthday will be held on the 26th of March this year.  We will require our members to RSVP and pay five dollars which will be refunded upon attendance at the dinner.

Our post has updated our means of communication.  We now have a Facebook page and a web address.  If anyone would like to friend us on Facebook we would love to add you.  We do post our events, closings due to weather, and other Legion updates on our Facebook page.  Our web address is http://www.orientamericanlegion.com.  Our website includes information on events, minutes from the meetings, how to join our club, and a slideshow of pictures.  We have also included a monthly calendar, contact information, and veteran related web links.  We also have an e-mail address which is orientamericanlegionpost1961@hotmail.com.
